Arenal and Playa de Palma, found on the South Coast of Mallorca, are situated one next to the other and are very close to Palma. These are two very important tourist resorts on the island, welcoming a great many (mostly German) tourists year after year. Arenal and Playa de Palma both originated as fishing villages which, as tourism in Mallorca grew, and thanks to their location by the airport, flourished into the large tourist resorts that they are today.
El Arenal has a big hotel presence, as well as many bars, restaurants, shops and other essential tourist facilities.
Nightlife plays an important role in the Arenal scene and there is a huge presence of bars and pubs aimed almost exclusively at its German clientele, highlights being Megapark or the Bierstrasse which are packed out in high season.
There are some very pleasant walking routes from Arenal around the headland at Cap Rocat for nature lovers. The Sierra de Tramuntana is quite far away but another fantastic walk is to the Puig de Randa, though it is necessary to have a car to get to the start.
A great walk in Arenal is along the extensive seafront to Can Pastilla or the yacht club. You can combine a walk along the promenade with a stop-off at one of the famous German bars in the area like the Megapark or the Bierstrasse.
For sea lovers, Arenal has a long beach of white sand, known as Playa de Palma. The beach at Arenal/Playa de Palma is well equipped with all the facilities such as sunbeds, bars, water sports, parasailing... The beach has been awarded blue flag status thanks to all the facilities offered. The long beach is divided into numbered sections or "balnearios" and the bars along the beach all belong to their own zone. From the beach you can take part in an endless number of water activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, pedalos, jetski, parasailing or standup paddle. There is a great variety of boat trips on offer from Arenal, giving you the opportunity to discover hidden coves and caves in Mallorca as well as the rich and interesting marine life in the area.
While at the beach you shouldn’t miss out on taking part in a boat or catamaran trip from Arenal to Cap Rocat and Cala Vella Cove. Exploring the island from out at sea gives you a stunning different perspective of this beautiful island.
Some of the most important familiy attractions of Mallorca are located in Arenal. Aqualand is the biggest water park on the island with slides, attractions and a wave pool, and it is right on the doorstep for people staying in Arenal. Palma Aquarium is another fantastic attraction, especially for families with children, and it is also located in Arenal - Playa de Palma. It is open all year round. Another fun attraction close by is the Forestal Park with its adventure circuit.
