Playa de Muro – Travel guide
Playa de Muro is one of the main tourist destinations in Mallorca. It is located in the north of Mallorca, in the bay of Alcudia, between Puerto de Alcudia and Can Picafort. Among its main attractions are its beaches and the S’Albufera Nature Park. It has a significant number of hotels that attract tourists of different nationalities who come to spend their holidays in Mallorca. Thanks to this, it offers a wide variety of activities, places to visit and things to do.
Unlike other places, Playa de Muro’s tourist development did not begin until the 1970s. It grew as more hotels were built near the beach, but with careful planning. Our experts in excursions in Mallorca from click-mallorca.com have created this travel guide to Playa de Muro so that you can learn a little more about this place. We will give you recommendations of things to do, information about the Playa de Muro beaches and advice on restaurants and hotels.
Beaches in Playa de Muro
As you can already imagine from the name, the beaches are one of the main attractions of Playa de Muro. The 7 kilometres of sand that make up the area are divided into 4 Sectors: Sector 1, Sector 2, Es Comú and Ses Casetes des Capellans. These last two are much less crowded because to get to them you have to take a walk or drive. It is also important to note that these last two sectors are part of the S’Albufera Natural Park and are close to Can Picafort.
They are beaches of fine white sand, with crystal clear and clean waters. In addition, there is a good distance until the water covers you, which makes it ideal for families with children. You can sit on the shore or even wade into the water a bit and lie down, and enjoy the views while you’re in the water. Unlike other beaches, there is no promenade bordering the beach. There are street parking lots along the road parallel to the beach.
Next, we present the different beaches, and at the end a map with the location of each of them.
Sector 1 Beach in Playa de Muro
This beach area starts at the Allsun Eden Alcudia hotel and goes to the Playa Esperanza hotel. It is about 1600 meters long and 40 metres wide. This is the most popular beach area in Playa de Muro, as there are a large number of services in its surroundings and on the beach. On the beach you can find lifeguard services, sunbeds and parasols. There is also the option of joining in water sports, such as parasail or banana boat. Throughout this area there is a large presence of hotels.
To park, you can do so on the main road or in the streets near the beach.
Sector 2 Beach in Playa de Muro
Sector 2 begins at the Hotel Playa Esperanza, where we find the Siurana channel, which is a small estuary where the sea water and the fresh water of the S’Albufera meet. The stretch of beach is 1700 metres long and about 35 metres wide. It is a less urbanized area than sector 1. Here we will find fewer hotels, but many private summer residences. Sector 2 ends after the area of Alcudia Pins, close to the Albufera Park Hotel.
This beach area extends from the Albufera Park Hotel to Es Capellans (at the entrance to Can Picafort). It is a completely virgin area in which there are no buildings of any kind. It is also a protected area, as there is a dune system that must be preserved. Therefore, you will see an area delimited by ropes that cannot be accessed.
The beach is like the one in sector 1 and 2, although somewhat narrower, and without any kind of services. It is ideal for those looking for something quieter. The beaches are bathed by turquoise waters that will leave you fascinated. The sand is white and fine. In fact, some consider Playa de Muro to be a small piece of the Caribbean in the Mediterranean.
Es Capellans belongs to the municipality of Muro, although due to its proximity, it is more closely related to Can Picafort. It is a very small area of just 400 metres long. The name is very curious: in the Mallorcan language it is “Caseta dels Capellans”, which translated into English means “little houses of the priests” referring to the fact that some of the houses in this area were occupied long ago by priests. The beach is very beautiful, and it is a lively area with the presence of restaurants and beach bars on the beach.

In this case, it is advisable to visit the park at a time when the heat is not so intense and better if it is not in summer.

From the different wooden jetties that you find on the beach, different boat trips depart every day. Among the options you have a dolphin watching tour, catamaran excursions, submarine vision boats or the ferry to Formentor Beach.
They are usually preferred by swimmers. In seasons where the winds allow it, surfing is the star sport in Playa de Muro. Now, if you want to experience a little more there is also an interesting offer for Kitesurfing. Many amateur swimmers choose this destination to be able to enjoy the good waves found on these shores. For those who are new to water sports, there are several schools that offer surf lessons. Another of the water sports in great demand is parasailing, which consists of parachute flights pulled by a motorboat.
Visit a winery and taste wines from Mallorca
We now bring you an ideal proposal for wine lovers. Near Can Picafort we find the Galmes Ribot winery, where they make an interesting range of wines. It is a winery with about 15 hectares of vineyards, which has been making wines for more than 16 years. It has focused on producing wines using the island’s local varieties and organic farming. It has white, rosé, red wine and a small production of red wines. They organize visits to the winery accompanied by a tasting of 3-4 wines.
The current owner, Cati Ribot, has been making her own line of natural wines for a few years. She makes a commitment to wines with minimal intervention so that they express all the fruit and the expression of the local variety. Among its most outstanding wines we have the one made with Giro Ros and the Escursac variety red. This variety had almost disappeared in Mallorca, and thanks to Cati’s work with the Balearic government they recovered it.
Not only that, but the winery is located in a breathtaking part of the countryside in Santa Margalida with spectacular vistas.
Summer night market in Playa de Muro
Every day in summer, a market with different craft stalls is held in the pedestrian area of Avinguda del Mar. The hours are from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., and it is certainly a good place to visit and stroll around before or after dinner.
