Es Trenc Beach. Information

Es Trenc is one of the most visited beaches in Mallorca; and for good reason. Es Trenc Beach has it all: shallow waters, ideal for swimming, especially for families with children; fine white sand; postcard-perfect views; and an unspoilt and natural setting away from the big built-up resorts.

Where is Es Trenc Beach?

Es Trenc is located in the southeast of Mallorca close to Campos and close to Colonia de Sant Jordi, and the beach begins just after the Ses Covetes area: another truly spectacular site with white sand, clear waters that invite you to swim, and a beach bar. Ses Covetes is similar to Es Trenc, but less popular, and therefore less crowded.

The Es Trenc sandbank is almost 3000 meters long, with 3 zones, in this order from Ses Covetes:

  • Arenal den Tem
  • Arenal den Tenc
  • Es Trenc Beach (this area being the closest to Colonia de Sant Jordi).

On this video Beach visitors are taking a walk on the beautiful white sand beach of Es Trenc situated in the South side of Mallorca Island:

The three areas of Es Trenc are not defined. All of them are distinguished by being a totally virgin area, with its dune system, fine white sands and crystal clear waters. The beach retains its beauty thanks to being located in a natural park, where building is not allowed. It’s a great beach for swimming, especially for families with children, thanks to its calm waters and long shallow area.

Continuing from Es Trenc Beach, before reaching the area of the Marques Hotel in Colonia de Sant Jordi, we find two beautiful small coves: “Es Pregons Grans” and “Es Pregons Petits”, other highly recommended beaches in the area with fine white sand.

Things to do at Es Trenc Beach

Surely the main thing will be swimming and sunbathing. Although a little further down we give you some other recommendations of things to do on Es Trenc Beach. If your main motivation is simply lying on the sand and soaking up the sun, you should keep in mind that you will not find shaded areas on the beach, unless you rent one of the sunbeds and umbrellas. The price is about €15. So, consider bringing your own parasol.

things to do es trenc: Relaxing at crystal waters

1- Walk along the beach

Along the almost 3 kilometers of sandy beach of Es Trenc, you can take a good walk, and see the different parts of the beach. You will not see a single hotel or other buildings; it is a completely virgin area. On one side you will have the crystal clear waters and, on the other, the sand dunes. From time to time you will see old bunkers built in the Second World War in anticipation of a possible attack. These bunkers are abandoned, in disuse and, due to the erosion of the beach, they appear completely unearthed. In 2014 the Madrid collective of artists Boa Mistura painted them white, an action framed in Campos’ ArtNit, and painted verses from the poem ‘Cala Gentil’ by Miquel Costa i Llobera. For families visiting Mallorca, one of the fun things to do at Es Trenc is to explore and learn about these bunkers.

2- Snorkelling

Snorkel in Mallorca is a great fun activity. Surely you have seen photos of Es Trenc Beach, like the ones you see on this page, and you have imagined yourself snorkelling in its waters. Rest assured that you will enjoy it. Remember: while snorkelling at Es Trenc should be on everyone’s list of things to do in Mallorca, make sure you check the weather forecast beforehand. If there is a strong wind from the south, the sea will be rough and it may not be the best day to enjoy snorkelling.

3- Water Activities

On the other hand, don’t add water activities to your list of things to do at Es Trenc Beach. Unfortunately at Es Trenc there are no water activities services, like those you can often find on other beaches. Those expecting some of the best Mallorca water activities such as jet ski, parasail, banana boat and similar options, this is not the beach for you. But don’t worry: there are lots of beaches in Mallorca that do offer these activities.

4- Sunset at Es Trenc

The sunset at Es Trenc is spectacular! Beautiful colours, a magical atmosphere, and the last rays of the sun reflected upon crystal clear waters… Truly amazing. We recommend that you watch the sunset from Es Trenc, and then take a swim in its refreshing waters. You won’t forget it. The sunset in Es Trenc is one of the most beautiful on the island, but not the only one. Check our future posts for information about the best sunsets in Mallorca and where to enjoy them.

How to get to Es Trenc?

If you have already decided to visit Es Trenc Beach, now you need to plan how to get to the Es Trenc beach. You can go by car, by public bus from Colonia de Sant Jordi, or you can get there on an organised excursion from other parts of the island. Here are more details about your options:

You can go by car to Es Trenc Beach, but we must warn you that Es Trenc is a natural area with restrictions on traffic and you cannot drive all the way to the beach. Parking close to Es Trenc is quite a complicated issue in summer. We already warned you in advance, that in the summer season, the issue of arriving by car is very complicated, both due to the volume of traffic, with its consequent queues and waiting times, and due to parking prices (not cheap, and that’s if you find a space).

You have two options of where to park:

Option 1: You can park your car in Ses Covetes, for which you must drive to Campos, and then to Sa Rapita, from where you will take the road towards Ses Covetes and Es Trenc. Here you should look for paid parking, because in the ORA zone it is almost impossible.

Option 2: The other option is to drive to the Ses Salines car park. To do this, you must take a road that begins at kilometer 8.8 of the MA-6040 road, and that passes through a salt mine. Later, it turns into a dirt track and ends in a dusty paid parking lot. From here, to get to Es Trenc Beach, you must walk around 7 minutes through thick sand. It is difficult to get a place in this car park in summer, so be sure to set off early.

If you don’t fancy driving to Es Trenc, you can go by bus from Palma. Take line 530 that goes from Palma to Sa Rapita and Ses Covetes, and from there you can walk to Es Trenc. The drawback: it takes a long time because the bus makes many stops en route.

One of the least stressful options is to visit Es Trenc on an organized tour. For those staying in the south of Mallorca, a good option is to book a place on an excursion in which they pick you up at your hotel. In this case, they take you to the Hotel Marqués area in Colonia de Sant Jordi. From there you can reach the beach in 15 minutes. You can book it in this link of the excursion.

Exploring around Es Trenc Beach

You may wish to spend the whole day on Es Trenc Beach, but if you have a car, it would be a shame not to visit the surrounding area, as there are many things to do and see in this beautiful corner of Mallorca, where you have a protected nature reserve that you can visit, the Ses Salines salt flats, and even the island of Cabrera.

1- Visit Es Salobrar de Campos

Es Salobrar de Campos is joined on to Es Trenc Beach. In fact, the beach is now part of this protected nature reserve. It constitutes one of the coastal systems with the greatest ecological value in Mallorca. In its 1,500 hectares, we will find 3 different areas: Es Trenc Beach, the dunes parallel to the coast, and the salt flats with farmland that are on its perimeter.

The Salobrar area is a group of different man-made ponds. Many of them are still used today for the extraction of salt. They are connected to the sea by means of a channel that conducts water from Es Trenc Beach. After the Alcudia lagoon, it is considered the second most important marshland on the island, and multiple species of migratory birds can be seen there. In fact, in spring and autumn, a wonderful show takes place when the pink flamingos make their migration stopover.

2- Discover the salt industry

A recommended activity if you are going to visit Es Trenc Beach or even if you are staying in the surroundings, is to visit the “Salinas”. During the guided tour of the salt mine, they explain to you how the coastal salt flats have been used for a long time, thanks to the ideal weather conditions for salt production. You will learn about the whole production process of this sea salt, and you will be able to make purchases.

3- Visit the Island of Cabrera

Did you know that very close to Es Trenc Beach, we have another natural paradise that is the Island of Cabrera? In fact, Cabrera is a National Park and is spectacular in its natural beauty. The only way to get to Cabrera is by boat. Boat trips depart from Colonia de Sant Jordi and allow you to explore the island, swim from its beaches and, on the way back, enjoy a dip at the Blue Cave. We recommend you to take the departure at 9:00, being back around 16:00 in Colonia de Sant Jordi. On this link you will find more information and you can also book: boat trip to Cabrera Island from Colonia Sant Jordi.

Once back in Colonia de Sant Jordi, visit the Colonial Ice Cream Parlor to have one of its famous ice creams. Then head back to Es Trenc Beach to enjoy the sunset in a unique setting.

  • You can stay in the Colonia de Sant Jordi area, where we have the Es Coto hotel and the Es Marques hotel.

Where to eat at Es Trenc?

The restaurant options on Es Trenc Beach are not many. In fact, it is not a bad recommendation to bring a picnic from home. Another idea is to stop in Campos or Colonia de Sant Jordi to buy something in one of their bakeries.

In the summer of 2017, when Es Trenc was declared a maritime-terrestrial natural park, all the beach bars that were in Es Trenc were demolished. Since 2018 they are removable kiosks, quite small and somewhat crowded. These “chiringuitos” (kiosks) offer the typical beach snack food, ice cream and soft drinks.

Restaurant at Es trenc beach

Otherwise there is the Es Trenc Restaurant, where reservations are necessary, being the best and most well-known restaurant in relative proximity to the beach. They offer seafood, paellas (approximate price of €23) and a children’s menu. Its location, almost on the beach, is spectacular. It has its own car park. You can see the location in the photo above.
