Es Trenc Beach: The Most Complete Visitors’ Guide
Es Trenc Beach in Mallorca is one of the most famous, beautiful and recommended beaches in Mallorca. Also, as you can imagine, it is also one of the most visited beaches in Mallorca. With its crystal clear waters and fine sand, it is an excellent plan during the summer to spend a day at the beach. A visit to Es Trenc Beach can also be combined with some activities in the surroundings, as you will be able to read later. In this article, we have prepared an extensive visitors’ guide with everything you need to know if you are going to visit Es Trenc Beach in Mallorca.
Es Trenc Beach
We are going to take a tour of the area where Es Trenc Beach is located:
Es Trenc Beach begins just after the Ses Covetes area, another truly spectacular site with white sand and clear waters that invite you to swim, and a beach bar. In some way, we could say that it is similar to Es Trenc, but less popular, and therefore less crowded.
The Es Trenc sandbank is almost 3000 meters long, with 3 zones, in this order from Ses Covetes:
- Arenal den Tem
- Arenal den Tenc
- Es Trenc beach, this area being the closest to Colonia de Sant Jordi.
There are no defined areas. All of them are distinguished by being a totally virgin area, with its dune system, fine white sands and crystal clear waters. Afterwards, and before reaching the area of the Marques Hotel in Colonia de Sant Jordi, we find two beautiful small coves: “Es Pregons Grans” and “Es Pregons Petits”, other highly recommended beaches with fine white sand.
What to do on Es Trenc Beach?
Surely the main thing will be swimming and sunbathing. Although a little further down we give you some other recommendations of things to do on Es Trenc Beach. If your main motivation is simply sunbathing, you should keep in mind that you will not find shaded areas on the beach, unless you rent one of the sunbeds and umbrellas. The price is about €15. So, consider bringing your own umbrella.
1- Walk on the beach
Along the almost 3 kilometers of sandy area of Es Trenc, you can take a good walk, and see the different areas that exist. You will not see a single hotel or buildings. It is a completely virgin area. On one side, the crystal clear waters, and on the other the sand dunes. From time to time you will be able to see old machine gun bunkers built in the period of the Second World War in anticipation of a possible attack. These bunkers are abandoned, in disuse and, due to the erosion of the beach, they appear completely unearthed. In 2014 the Madrid collective of artists Boa Mistura painted them white, an action framed in Campos’ ArtNit, and painted verses from the poem ‘Cala Gentil’ by Miquel Costa i Llobera.
Surely you have seen photos of Es Trenc Beach, like the ones you see on this page, and you have imagined yourself snorkelling in its waters. Rest assured that you will enjoy it. Of course, a little advice, check the weather forecast beforehand. If there is a strong wind from the south, the sea will be rough, it may not be the best day to enjoy snorkelling.
3- Water Activities
Unfortunately in Es Trenc there are no water activities services, as it you can often find on other beaches. Those expecting jet ski, parasail, banana boat and similar options, this is not the beach for you.
4- Sunset at Es Trenc
The sunset at Es Trenc is spectacular! With its colours, its magical atmosphere, the last rays of the sun reflected in its crystal clear waters… If you can, we recommend you watch the sunset from Es Trenc, and then take a swim in its refreshing waters. You won’t forget it. The sunset in Es Trenc is one of the most beautiful on the island, but not the only one. Check our future posts for information about the best sunsets in Mallorca and where to enjoy them.
How to get to Es Trenc Beach?
If you have already decided to go to Es Trenc Beach, now you need to plan how to get to the beach. Here are a couple of options:
If you go by car you have two options where to park (quite a complicated issue in summer). We already warned you in advance, that in the summer season, the issue of arriving by car is very complicated, both due to the volume of traffic, with its consequent queues and waiting times, and due to parking prices (not cheap, and that’s if you find a space).
You can park your car in Ses Covetes, for which you must go to Campos, and then to Sa Rapita, where you will take the road towards Ses Covetes and Es Trenc. Here you should look for paid parking, because in the ORA zone it is almost impossible.
The other option is to head to the heart of the beach. To do this, you must take a road that begins at kilometer 8.8 of the MA-6040 road, and that passes through a salt mine. Later, it turns into a dirt track and ends in a paid parking lot.
By bus from Palma
You can take line 530 that goes from Palma to Sa Rapita and Ses Covetes, and from there walk to Es Trenc. Its drawback: that it takes a long time because the bus makes many stops.
Another option is to take the bus from Palma to Colonia de Sant Jordi, and go to the El Marques Hotel. Although we must say that it is a good hike.
Visit on an organized tour
For those who come on vacation, stay in the south of Mallorca and do not want to rent a car, a good option is to book a place on an excursion in which they pick you up at your hotel. In this case, they take you to the Hotel Marqués area in Colonia de Sant Jordi. From there you can reach the beach in 15 minutes. You can book it in this link of the excursion.
What to do around Es Trenc?
You may wish to spend the whole day on Es Trenc Beach, but if you have a car, it would be a shame not to visit the surrounding area, as there are many things to do and see in this beautiful corner of Mallorca.
1- Visit Es Salobrar de Campos
Es Salobrar de Campos is located occupying part of Es Trenc beach. It constitutes one of the coastal systems with the greatest ecological value in Mallorca. In its 1,500 ha, we will find 3 different areas: Es Trenc beach, the back dunes parallel to the coast, and the salt flats with farmland that are on its perimeter.
The Salobrar area is a group of different man-made ponds. Many of them are still used today for the extraction of salt. They are connected to the sea by means of a channel that conducts water from Es Trenc Beach. After the Alcudia lagoon, it is considered the second most important marshland on the island, and multiple species of migratory birds can be seen there. In fact, in spring and autumn, a wonderful show takes place when the pink flamingos make their migration stopover.
2- Know the salt industry
A recommended activity if you are going to visit Es Trenc Beach or even if you are staying in the surroundings, is to visit the “Salinas”. During the guided tour of the salt mine, they explain to you how the coastal salt flats have been used for a long time, thanks to the ideal weather conditions for salt production. You will learn about the whole production process of this sea salt, and you will be able to make purchases.
3- Visit the Island of Cabrera
Very close to Es Trenc Beach, we have another natural paradise that is the Island of Cabrera. In fact, it is a national park. The only way to get to Cabrera is by boat. Boat trips depart from Colonia de Sant Jordi and allow you to explore the island, take a swim on its beaches and on the way back enjoy a swim at the Blue Cave. We recommend you to take the departure at 9:00, being back around 16:00 in Colonia de Sant Jordi. On this link you will find more information and you can also book: boat trip to Cabrera Island from Colonia Sant Jordi.
Once back in Colonia de Sant Jordi, visit the Colonial Ice Cream Parlor to have one of its famous ice creams. Then head to Es Trenc Beach to enjoy the sunset in a unique setting.
Hotels in Es Trenc
We have already commented that Es Trenc is a totally virgin territory and is protected by different laws. So constructions are not allowed. That is why there is no hotel directly on Es Trenc Beach.
If you want to stay in a hotel or accommodation near Es Trenc, here are some recommendations:
- You can stay in the Colonia de Sant Jordi area, where we have the Es Coto hotel and the Es Marques hotel.
- At the entrance to Colonia de Sant Jordi we have the 5-star Thermal Spa del Font Santa Hotel. This place has the only hot springs of underground origin exploited on the island.
- In the municipality of Campos there are many rural hotels. Among them we highlight the Revellar Art Resort, which has one of the best art collections in Mallorca, and 17 rooms.
Restaurants on the beach of Es Trenc
Unfortunately, the restaurant options on Es Trenc beach are not many. In fact, it is not a bad recommendation to bring a picnic from home. Another idea is to stop in Campos or Colonia de Sant Jordi to buy something in one of their bakeries.
In the summer of 2017, when Es Trenc was declared a maritime-terrestrial natural park, all the beach bars that were in Es Trenc were demolished. Since 2018 they are removable kiosks, quite small and somewhat crowded. These “chiringuitos” (kiosks) offer the typical beach snack food, ice cream and soft drinks.
Then we have the Es Trenc restaurant, where reservations are necessary, being the best and most well-known restaurant by the beach. They offer seafood, paellas (approximate price of €23) and a children’s menu. Its location almost on the beach is spectacular. It has its own car park. You can see the location in the photo above.
