How to get to the Caves of Drach?

If you come on holiday to Mallorca, here is how you how to get to the Caves of Drach, one of the most visited caves on the island. In this post, our team of local experts in excursions in Mallorca will tell you about the different options you have to visit the caves, so you can choose the means of transport that best suits your needs.

How to get to the Caves of Drach

The Caves of Drach are located in Porto Cristo, on the east coast of Mallorca. They are open all year round, and your visit includes a tour of its best chambers, a music concert on Lake Martel and a wooden boat ride on the lake. It is one of the must-see places in Mallorca, and there is no travel guide or blog on the internet that does not recommend a visit.

Go by Car

If you have decided to rent a car during your holidays in Mallorca, your visit to the caves will be very easy. Just enter ‘Caves of Drach’ as your destination in the car’s navigation system and you will be given a suggested route. Whatever the starting point of your route, you will see that it is very easy to drive. No country lanes, no narrow roads. In fact, once you arrive in Porto Cristo, you will already see signs and indications of the Cuevas del Drach.

When you arrive you will see the free parking area on the left hand side. From there, walk to the ticket office, buy your ticket and enjoy the Caves of Drach!

Going to the Caves of Drach by Public Transport

As the Caves of Drach are such a popular tourist attraction, it is only natural that there are public transport connections from different parts of the island. The only problem is that they often require transfers and a bit of walking, which means a lot of time wasted.

Here’s how to get there from the island’s main tourist destinations:

To the Drach caves from Palma

To get to the Caves of Drach from Palma, we must go to the intermodal station located in Plaza de España. From there, we must take bus line 401 which will take us to Porto Cristo, and from here we must walk for around 20 minutes or so to reach the Caves of Drach. The duration of the bus route from Palma to Porto Cristo is about 75 minutes. So, between bus and walk, it is more than 90 minutes. A total of 3 hours round trip, without counting the visit to the caves, the waiting time to buy the tickets and the time you may need to go to the toilet, have a drink in the bar…

Bear in mind that if you are staying in a resort near Palma, whether it be Santa Ponsa, Magalluf, Palmanova, Arenal… you will have to travel to Palma first, which is approximately 45-60 minutes depending on the hotel where you are staying.

To the Caves of Drach from Alcudia

The northern part of Mallorca has some well-known tourist resorts, such as Port de Alcudia, Playa de Muro or Can Picafort. From this area it is also possible to get to the caves by public bus, but again you have to change buses, which makes the route to the caves much longer.

From Port Alcudia we must take bus number 325 to Cala Ratjada, and from there change to the bus that goes to Porto Cristo. Finally, there is the 20-minute walk to the caves. This option is only available during the summer season, which is when this bus route is in operation. The approximate time you need from leaving Port Alcudia until you reach the caves is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.

During the winter, you will have two different options, although both also include a transfer. The first is to go by public transport to Palma and from there to Porto Cristo. The second option is to go by public transport to Inca and from there by train to Manacor, then by bus to Porto Cristo. Please have in mind, you will need at least 2 hours and 30 minutes to get to the caves.

From Cala Millor or Cala Dor

As they are tourist centres close to the Caves, the transfer time by bus from these areas is shorter, and in just one hour (or even less) you can reach Porto Cristo, and from there walk about 20 minutes to your destination.

Excursion to the Caves of Drach

If you are not going to rent a car, for us this is the best option, as it is the most comfortable, quickest and most efficient way to get to the Drach caves.

With an organised excursion you have all these advantages:

  1. Pick up near your hotel
  2. You are guaranteed a seat on the bus
  3. They take you directly to the caves, with no stops on route, like there are with public transport.
  4. Your tickets are already guaranteed. No more queuing at the ticket office or finding that the caves are sold out or that you have to wait a few more hours for your visit.
  5. You have a guide from the island who gives you information about the caves, who has everything organised for your peace of mind and who helps you with any questions or problems.

A few months ago we read an opinion on the internet, which explained it very well: ‘they take you, you visit the caves, you don’t queue, they organise it for you and they take you back. It’s more expensive than going by public bus, but you save a lot of time, and in the end it’s cheaper’.

Is it possible to go by boat to the Caves of Drach?

You can’t imagine how many times we have been asked this question! Unfortunately, it´s not possible to go to the Caves of Drach by boat. The closest thing is to go by boat from Cala Millor to Porto Cristo, and from there walk to the caves.

Many people think that you enter the caves by boat, but this is not the case either. You enter on foot, follow a walking route through the interior of the caves until you reach the Lake Martel. There, there is an underground theatre where a short classical music concert is performed, and at the end you can take a small wooden boat across the lake. They take you to the other end of Lake Martel, and from there, you walk to the exit.

Where to park at the Caves of Drach?

If you’re planning to visit the impressive Caves of Drach, one of Mallorca’s most popular tourist destinations, you’ll be pleased to know that parking is very easy and convenient. The Caves of Drach have a free, large and well-located car park, which makes it very easy to arrive by car.

The car park at the Caves of Drach is located right in front of the ticket office, so it is easy to find. From the moment you arrive, you will clearly see the signs that will guide you to the car park, and a guard from the caves’ staff will show you where you can park your car in an orderly fashion.

  • Spacious: There is plenty of space in the car park, so parking is easy, even during the high season.
  • Free: The parking here is Free, adding convenience and savings to your visit.
  • Security: The carpark is guarded by a Guard in operation with the Caves of Drach. They are in charge of security of course, and guiding the visitors to their spaces – making it safe and organised.

From the car park, the walk to the ticket office is very short. You will have to walk around 100 metres to reach the ticket office area where you can pick up your tickets or buy them if you don’t already have them.

Once you have collected your tickets, the entrance to the Caves of Drach is only 400 metres from the ticket office, making it very easy for all visitors to access.
